Rafinesque’s Big-Eared Bat and Southeastern Myotis Roost Site Selection – Ft. Bragg, NC

For six years, Copperhead Consulting mist-netted at Ft. Bragg and Camp Mackall in the sandhills of North Carolina in compliance with the installation’s Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP). In addition to creating a bat species list for the installation, any Rafinesque’s big-eared bats (CORA) or southeastern myotis (MYAU) caught were radio-tagged and tracked to diurnal roosts. Many abandoned buildings and cisterns or those used for troop training were searched during the day to identify artificial roosts or collect bats for radio-tagging. We also helped build the call library (i.e., bat vocalizations) for Ft. Bragg by light-tagging bats and recording their calls as they were free flying.
